Echo Master

What it is

Every blow from the Echo Master rings twice. It fights at the same steady pace as the Ember Master: wind-ups of about 0.25 to 0.7 seconds, and an opening of about 0.75 seconds after a chain. It has 23 named techniques and raises its guard after every third attack.

At the start of the trial it tells you its lesson: its blows ring twice, so leave the lane before the second toll, then counter.

How to get it

No wandering duelist breathes Echo. To call this Master, breathe Echo yourself. Then sneak and use a wandering duelist of any method except Starlit, Hourglass, Crimson, Tide, Iron or Dune, since those always call their own Master. You can also type /master challenge echo. You need Aura Form or Heart Circle VIII. See Sword Masters for the full trial rules.

To train for it, look for a Resonance Chamber under deep dark, dripstone or lush caves. A bell frame marks it on the surface, and a ladder leads down. Its Echo vault is sealed with wind: hit every seal block with a wind spell within 10 seconds. See Masters’ sites. On the deep dark floor, an Echo Post holds Echo manual pages. See wild places.

Tolling Bell

Tolling Bell is one of the Master’s named techniques: a thrust, then a reply cut. It comes up three times as often as any other single technique. The banner reads “Leave the lane! It tolls twice.”

  • The lane is 9 blocks long and 2.2 blocks wide, with pale lines along its sides. It starts half a block behind the Master.
  • The second toll rings down the same lane from the same spot, even if the Master has turned since.
  • Jumping does not clear it. Step out sideways.
  • Each toll that hits you also makes you dizzy for 2.5 seconds.
  • Together the two tolls deal about 37 damage before armor. The second one lands at about 1 second, and the Master is open for about 0.75 seconds after.

It needs a clear line to you, so solid cover blocks it.

Other moves

  • Techniques: chains of two to four strikes. Read each strike’s shape. See Reading a Master.
  • Pursuit dash: if you hold a spell too long, it may dash up to 4.8 blocks at you, at most once every 7 seconds.
  • Crescent volley: flying blades if you stay far away or high up.

Rewards for a clear

  • Your first Echo clear teaches the Wave technique part.
  • The win goes into your lore journal. Type /master victories to see which Masters you have beaten.

The Echo breathing method

Echo is a Wind method. Its passive gives your blows a chance to ring again, and from Edge onward the foe also reels. Its arts unlock as your aura grows:

Art Opens at Input
Ringing Cut Glow swing, swing, low swing
Resonant Chord Flow leaping swing, then low swing
Counterpoint Edge first swing after a perfect Aura Guard
Reverb Step Form first swing after an Aura Step
Grand Resonance Sovereign three full swings, then low swing

See Breathing Methods for the full numbers. A Resonance Chamber’s Echo chest can hold Echolocate, Resonant Shriek and Push runes.

Tips and counterplay

  • When you see the pale side lines, step sideways out of the lane. Don’t jump, and don’t back straight up.
  • If the first toll hits you, there is a short gap before the second. Use it to leave the lane, not to swing.
  • The Master may turn, but the second toll won’t. Stand beside the old lane and counter from there.
  • The Echo Master guards after every third attack. Flank it or use an axe.
