Emberwood Reach
Where dry Overworld mesa borders give way to oak and birch woodland, a warm ash-humus floor of podzol, coarse dirt and grass opens into the Emberwood Reach. Charcoal burners and Marchkeeper smiths cleared these firebreaks to feed the gatehouse forges without letting a summer spark run the whole timberline.
Look where warm, humid woodland climate meets wooded badlands. The Emberwood Reach occupies the humid band of the wooded badlands climate, keeping natural transitions into surrounding mesa and forest country. It appears in newly generated chunks; existing land keeps its saved biome. Entering the region adds a permanent field note to the Places tab of your lore journal.
Read the ash floor
The woodland floor mixes podzol, coarse dirt and grass beneath oaks and birches, with leaf litter and Cinder Ferns rooting along the dry humus. Watch for raised clay vents before stepping into a fern patch, and keep a cooling spell or water source in mind when working near hot fronds.
Around noon under open sky, Emberwood Reach also holds Sunscorch attunement. Meditate with a Blank Rune using the ordinary attunement ritual. It shares the daily rest of the badlands habitats; crossing into adjacent badlands does not grant a second rune before that rest ends.
Creatures and Cinder Ferns
| Look for | Approach |
|---|---|
| Cinder Bailiff | Broad four-footed woodland wardens with fired-clay breastplates that browse mature cooled Cinder Ferns and guard them with a three-lane ash fan. |
| Cinderfox | Warm-coated woodland foxes that hunt along the firebreaks and dry timber edges. |
| Dune Cougar | Tawny ridge predators that prowl the warm border between mesa and woodland. |
The Cinder Bailiffs and Ferns guide explains cooling hot ferns, harvesting mature cooled fronds while leaving the root in place, and answering a Bailiff’s three-lane warning.
Charcoal yards along the firebreak
Emberwood Charcoal Yards stand on dry woodland shelves across the Emberwood Reach, wooded badlands and forests. Look for a mud-brick and coarse-dirt firebreak perimeter, a north brick spark-screen wall, a dark-oak burner’s shed with an active hearth kiln, and an eastern brick-and-copper draft stack carrying a shuttered redstone lamp and lever. Along the western firebreak lies an open-sky ash bed of six living, cooled Cinder Ferns ready for tending and harvest. Inside the shed, the lectern carries Eleven Winters at the Gate, a four-page account of how Ashwin’s burners kept the gatehouse forges lit after the road fell quiet.
An Emberwood Kiln Keeper tends the yard. Use the resident to open ordinary weaponsmith trades. Crouch and use them to hear their stories, leaving a short pause between lines. Meeting the keeper adds them to the People tab of your lore journal, and each story remains under Talk. The keeper explains the cooled Cinder Fern ash bed, the firebreaks and the old Kiln Court deeper in the reach. Returning as your investigation advances unlocks guidance on the gatehouse forge records, the kiln draft lamp and the optional Kiln Court challenge.
Finding a yard earns Keeper of the Kilns.
Follow Eleven Winters at the Gate
Speaking with an Emberwood Kiln Keeper through their fourth story opens Eleven Winters at the Gate in the lore journal. Visit a Mountain Forge Hall, Prospector’s Camp, Basalt Foundry or Emberwood Kiln Court to complete The Southern Forge Ledgers, matching the forge tallies against the burners’ charcoal deliveries. The final chapter, The Kiln Draft Lamp, asks you to flip the lever on a Charcoal Yard’s eastern draft stack and stand within six blocks of the lit lamp. A draft lamp another traveller already lit also counts.
The three chapters pay 90 XP, five Blank Runes and one Aura Shard in total, once per player, with no combat or Aura stage required.
Old kilns and the Kiln Court
On open woodland terraces stands the Emberwood Kiln Court, a circular ceramic and mud-brick firing court with four coarse-dirt firebreak causeways and a northern stoking shelter holding a Kiln Heartstone and The Cooled Kiln. Stoking the heartstone in Survival challenges the Kiln Widow. The encounter is optional and separate from the peaceful Charcoal Yard journal route.
The Forge Dojo and the Iron Gatehouse can also stand in the Emberwood Reach. The region itself has no Heart Circle or Aura requirement, though ordinary monsters still appear after dark.
