Places and times of power

What it is

Where you stand and when you cast change how hard your spells hit. Where two ley lines cross, every spell is stronger and cheaper. Under the open sky, the moon, the hour and the weather each favour some elements. Each bonus is small (10 to 25%), but they add up.

Ley crossings

Ley lines run in two weaves across the Overworld. Where a line of one meets a line of the other is a ley crossing.

At a ley crossing
Damage Every spell +10%
Price Every spell 10% cheaper (mana, or health for Blood Price)
Mana and Heart Circles As on any ley line
Harmonies Some harmonies wake for the first time only here

Finding one. While you wear a Cord, a crossing shimmers: pale rings turning on the ground, a faint column of light and rising motes. The easiest way to find one is to follow a ley line until another crosses it. Crossings never move.

A crossing is small: you need to stand near its heart. When you do, “A ley crossing: every spell is stronger and cheaper here” shows above your hotbar. The first time earns the Crossroads advancement. Your HUD and Cord screen show the cheaper prices while you stand there.

The moon, the hour and the weather

These only count under the open sky in the Overworld, not under a roof.

When Favours
Full moon (clear night) Arcane +15%, Void +15%
New moon (clear night) Blood +15%, Void +10%
Noon (not raining) Fire +15%
Dawn and dusk Time +15%
Rain Frost +10%, Fire -10%
Thunderstorm overhead Storm +25%

Clouds hide the moon. Night itself also gives Void +10%, so a clear full-moon night gives void about +26% in all.

Elsewhere:

Where Favours
The Nether Fire +20%, Frost -25%
The End Void +20%

More climate effects (snow, heat, deep underground) are on Creature Affinities. However they stack, an element never drops below half strength or goes above +50%.

Seeing what’s favoured

Small marks after your spell’s name on the HUD show favoured (green ▲) or hindered (red ▼) elements. When something new starts (the moon rises, rain begins, you step onto a crossing), a line over the spell panel says why for a few seconds. The Grimoire keeps the same lines under Where you stand.

Tips and counterplay

  • Duel at a crossing. It helps both of you equally.
  • Wait for the moon. Void and arcane hit harder on a clear full-moon night. Blood waits for the new moon.
  • Fire at noon, frost in the rain.
  • Time casters love dawn and dusk. Dawn lasts about two minutes, dusk a little over one.
  • Against other players, these bonuses share the same cap as reactions, so they never make a one-shot.
  • Server owners can turn these bonuses off or change their strength.
