Spell Cut
What it is
Spell Cut is a learned sword lesson: you swing at a hostile spell bolt just as it reaches you, and your blade cuts it out of the air. The spell fizzles before it can hit you.
It is a field form that needs no slot. Once learned it is always ready, whatever Master form you have equipped (or none). It does not share the Master-form rest.
Do not mix it up with Spellcut, the Master’s Art on the U key (14 Aura, 3 s rest) that severs up to 3 incoming bolts in front of you and slashes nearby foes. That one is an Aura art; see Aura. Spell Cut is the timed swing described here.
How to get it
- Reach the Form Aura stage (Stage IV). See Aura.
- Clear an Ember Master trial. Older clears count, and any breathing method works. See Ember Master.
- Learn Ember Riposte first. An Ember teacher teaches in order: Cinder Lunge (skipped while you are below Sovereign), then Ember Riposte, then Spell Cut.
- Find a wandering Ember teacher. When you are ready they say they can teach you to cut a spell from the air. Sneak and use them with an empty main hand while they can see you, within 6 blocks.
- Read the lesson, Cutting the Thread by Hessa Vane, kiln guard, and accept it.
The lesson then stays in the Cord screen (K) under Aura > Master form > Field forms, and in your Grimoire.
How it works
Hold an Aura weapon and attack (your normal attack button) as a hostile spell bolt flies at you. There is no extra key.
If no hostile bolt is near, your swing is just a normal swing and costs nothing. When a bolt is within reach, the game judges your timing:
| Result | When | Cost | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cut | The bolt is within 4 blocks, you are facing it, and it is flying toward you | 14 Aura | 0.3 s |
| Miss | The bolt is still farther off (up to 9 blocks), off to the side, or not coming at you squarely | 6 Aura | 1 s |
A cut bolt fizzles out. Your HUD shows Spell cut or Missed the spell. The first time you cut one, you get the message “Spell Cut: a spell cut from the air.”
If a block gets between your eyes and the bolt at the last moment, the swing counts as a miss: you still pay the 14 Aura and take the 1-second recovery.
What you can cut
- Hostile spell bolts only: spells cast by someone who is allowed to hurt you (a mob, an enemy, or a player outside your party where harm is allowed).
- The spell must carry something harmful or something that moves you, including in its follow-up effects. Helpful spells such as heals are never cut.
- One bolt per swing.
You cannot cut arrows, blasts or melee blows with it.
Limits
- You need a held Aura weapon.
- It does not work during another form or art, while you are still recovering, or in spectator mode.
- There is no rest timer. The only wait is the recovery after each swing, so a missed swing leaves you open for a full second.
Tips
- Wait for it. Swinging early is the most common mistake. A miss still costs Aura and leaves you off balance for a second, so let the bolt come close.
- Face it squarely. Bolts coming from the side are a miss. Turn toward the caster first.
- Keep at least 14 Aura spare when you fight casters.
- Pair it with Ember Riposte. Riposte answers a caught blade; Spell Cut answers a spell.
- See Master Forms for the other field forms, and Sword Masters for the trials.
