Kiln Widow
On the firing terraces of the Emberwood Reach, a circular ceramic and mud-brick court holds an articulated kiln automaton of vitrified terracotta plates, copper draft flues and glowing firebrick ribs. The charcoal burners call it the Kiln Widow. Built to regulate draft and clear slag across the old firing rings, it still tests the footing of anyone who stokes its heartstone.
The Emberwood Kiln Court
Look for a circular mud-brick and terracotta firing ring with four coarse-dirt firebreak causeways, eight copper-banded flue stacks and a central lodestone firing plinth. Its northern stoking shelter holds a Kiln Heartstone, a supply chest and a two-page field manual, The Cooled Kiln. The chest can hold Hearthfire, Bake, Kindle, Smelt or Kiln Breath runes. Walking into the court earns The Cooled Kiln and adds a Places entry to your lore journal.
Use the Kiln Heartstone in Survival to begin the optional challenge. The guardian gives you three seconds before its first firing cycle. Reading the book, visiting the court or finishing the peaceful Eleven Winters at the Gate story does not begin combat. Guardians must be enabled, and the world must be above Peaceful difficulty.
The Kiln Widow remains anchored at the central firing plinth. Its ceramic mantle, copper draft flues, slag ladle arm and firebreak dampers each announce the next cycle before the heat lands.
Read the firing cycle
| Move | Warning | How to answer | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kiln draft | The copper flues flare for 1.6 seconds. An annular ring marks the 3.0-to-6.5-block firing band around the plinth. | Step onto the cooled hearth directly beside the plinth (within 3 blocks) or out beyond 6.5 blocks. | 1.2 seconds |
| Slag pour | A glowing ember circle marks the floor for 2.2 seconds. | Leave the 2.25-block-radius circle. The ladle keeps its marked spot when you move; a hit pulls you slightly toward the plinth. | 1.6 seconds |
| Firebreak sweep | The dampers open for 2.8 seconds. Crosses mark the hot sectors, and two clear sightlines bound the cooled firebreak flue lane. | Stand in the unlit 3.5-block firebreak lane between the sightlines through the impact. | 2 seconds |
The ground markings remain readable with Minimal particles. Each attack can hit you once, and every recovery window leaves time to answer on foot. Base damage is 6 for the kiln draft, 5 for the slag pour and 7 for the firebreak sweep, before ordinary difficulty, tempering and defences. Base health is 180 with 4 armour.
At half health the Kiln Widow shifts its firing cadence and rotates later cooled firebreak lanes between the east-west and north-south causeways. A tell already underway keeps the bearing and cooled lane it showed you. Read each new sweep rather than relying on the previous lane.
Leaving and returning
The four firebreak causeways stay open. Stepping outside the court cancels an attack aimed at you. After ten seconds without an eligible challenger, the guardian cools and returns to rest at the central plinth. Stoke the heartstone again whenever you are ready. Reloading a saved encounter also returns it to rest so no unfinished firing cycle lands as the world reopens.
The heartstone remembers its guardian. Repeated clicks do not create extra bosses, and a heartstone placed outside a real Emberwood Kiln Court has no encounter to wake. The court generates only in newly explored chunks.
Compass of the Cooled Kiln
When the Kiln Widow yields, each surviving player still in the arena who dealt an accepted hit during that attempt receives 80 XP, a permanent Learned entry in the lore journal, and one Compass of the Cooled Kiln. The compass points back to that exact Kiln Court in its dimension without requiring you to place a lodestone.
Return to an Emberwood Kiln Keeper after the victory. Once you have heard the keeper’s four stories, they recognize the cooled compass you carry and record their parting acknowledgement in your journal’s Talk tab.
The heartstone stays complete after victory and does not repeat its reward. Leaving an attempt or reloading clears that attempt’s participation. The peaceful Charcoal Yard route keeps its own clues and rewards.
