The Runesmith

A villager in violet robes with gold trim and a hood, standing beside a wooden Scribing Desk on a deepslate base A Runesmith at their Scribing Desk

What it is

The Runesmith is a villager who deals in runes. They sell Blank Runes, runes up to Tier III, Mana Crystals and Torn Pages, and they buy back or swap runes you already know.

How to get it

Any villager without a job takes the Runesmith’s job from a Scribing Desk, just as a librarian takes a lectern.

The Scribing Desk

Any wooden slabs work, even mixed. The desk gives off a soft light and can burn. Right-click it to open your daily contracts.

What a Runesmith sells

Each level offers two random trades from its list. Every rune on sale is random too. Prices below are starting prices; they change with reputation and demand like any villager’s.

A Runesmith never sells innate, fused or world runes.

A wandering trader sometimes sells a random Tier I or II rune for 8 Emeralds, once.

Buyback and swaps

A Master Runesmith's trading screen: 20 emeralds for a Mana Crystal, and 32 emeralds and a diamond for a Tier III rune A Master Runesmith’s trades. Buybacks and swaps appear below when you carry runes you know.

Carry runes you already know, open the trades, and extra offers appear just for you.

Buyback pays emeralds for a known rune:

Tier Pays
I 1 Emerald
II 2 Emeralds
III 5 Emeralds
IV 10 Emeralds

Reroll swaps two known runes of one tier for one rune of that tier you don’t know yet. The trade shows the rune you’ll get, and it stays the same all day until you learn something new.

The limits:

  • Up to 6 buyback offers show at once, highest tiers first.
  • 8 buybacks a day, across every Runesmith. Rerolls have no daily limit.
  • Only plain rank I runes the Runesmith deals in. Not ranked runes, Knots, innate, fused or world runes, and never Lightning.
  • No experience for you or the Runesmith.

Tips and counterplay

  • Learn first, then trade. A rune only counts once you know it.
  • Reroll before you sell. Two spare Tier III runes are 10 emeralds, or one new Tier III rune.
  • Keep spares for the altar. See Ranks and Combining.
  • Paper and ink sacs are what you need for Spell Scrolls.
