Blade Smithing

A Sword Master’s blade leaves a sliver of itself behind. Beat a Master and you take Master’s Steel: two slivers the first time that Master falls to you, one for every fall after. If your inventory is full, the steel drops at your feet.

Tempering a blade

Put your bonded blade in the left slot of an anvil and Master’s Steel in the right. The anvil tempers the blade one level. It has to be your own bonded blade: an unbonded sword, or a blade bonded to someone else, takes no temper.

Temper Steel Levels Coated blows
I 2 6 +5%
II 4 8 +10%
III 6 10 +15%
IV 8 12 +20%
V 10 14 +25%

A full temper takes 30 steel. That is every Master’s first fall and then some, or a lot of repeat duels.

How far a blade tempers

The bond decides how far a blade can go:

Bond Highest temper
Bonded I
Named II
Awakened III
Soulforged V

What a temper does

A temper makes the bonus on your coated blows bigger, the extra damage that an aura coating adds to a sword strike. It doesn’t touch the blade’s base damage, and everything stays under the same caps as before. Against another player a temper counts for half. A temper only works while bonds are on and you’re holding your own bonded blade.

The temper lives on the blade itself, so it goes wherever the blade goes, including when you pass the bond on. The blade’s tooltip shows its temper.
