What it is

You have an affinity with each of the ten elements. It grows with what you do: cast fire, smelt ore and fight in the Nether, and fire comes easier. Each level makes that element’s spells a little stronger. From III you resist it, and at V its spells cost less. Even a mastered element is only 15% stronger.

How to use it

Level Points (in all) That element’s spells Others’ spells of it on you Its spells cost
none yet 0
I 100 +3% power
II 600 +6% power
III 1,800 +9% power 10% softer
IV 4,500 +12% power 15% softer
V 10,000 +15% power 20% softer 10% less
  • Power means everything the element’s runes do: damage, healing, shields, pushes.
  • It counts on spells you cast from your Cord, imbued items and glyphs. Scrolls and passives don’t get it.
  • Mixed spells get each element’s bonus on its own effects. At V the price cut applies to that element’s share: half fire, half frost costs 5% less with Fire V.
  • Every level is announced. The first level of each element condenses 100 mana toward your next Heart Circle.

How to get it

Three things raise every element:

What Points A day, at most
Casting its spells 1 for every 10 mana its effects cost (a Fire Bolt, 12 mana, is 1.2) 100, then a tenth as fast
Setting off a reaction it takes part in 3 to each element in it (at most one reaction a second counts) 45
Finding a creature weak to it (a new weakness in your Bestiary) 25 100

Casting counts the mana you actually paid, split between the spell’s elements. Passives, imbued items, scrolls and Creative mode count for nothing.

Which elements a reaction feeds:

Reaction Feeds Reaction Feeds
Shatter Fire, Frost Fracture Earth, Frost
Conduct Storm, Frost Blight Life, Void
Wildfire Fire, Wind Unweave Arcane
Implode Void, Fire Rupture Wind, Blood
Collapse Void, Wind Elapse Time
Overload Storm, Fire

And everyday things feed the element they fit. “Every 5 seconds” means for every 5 seconds you spend doing it.

Fire

What Points A day, at most
Smelting: taking what a furnace, blast furnace or smoker made (by hand; a hopper counts for nobody) 1 per 4 items 30
Killing with fire: a creature that dies burning, or to fire, by your hand or spell 2 each 30
Being on fire and living through it (not with Fire Resistance) 1 every 5 seconds 15
Standing near lava in the Nether (within 3 blocks) 1 every 10 seconds 15

Frost

In Wildercord, water magic belongs to frost.

What Points A day, at most
Catching fish: anything a fishing rod reels in from the water 3 each 30
Snowy and frozen lands, or standing on ice 1 every 10 seconds 15
Frozen stiff (in powder snow, say) and living through it 1 every 5 seconds 15

Storm

What Points A day, at most

Struck by lightning and living through it (a real bolt, not a spell) 40 80
A lightning rod struck within 16 blocks of you 8 24

Wind

A heavy blow: 4 hearts or more in one hit from a creature or another player, survived 3 21

The daily allowance

Each way of gaining points has its own daily cap, so nothing can be farmed. A day is one in-game day of play (about 20 minutes); sleeping doesn’t reset it sooner. Casting never stops counting, but past 100 a day it slows to a tenth. Killing players, Creative mode and spectating earn nothing. Hover an element in the Grimoire to see every way to raise it and its cap.

Leaning

Your leaning is your deepest affinity: level I or more, with at least a quarter more points than any other element. Your Heart Circles and charging circles take its colour, and the first time you earn the Leaning feat.

Resisting other casters

From level III, that element’s spells hurt you less, whoever cast them (Runebound, bosses, players).

  • Only damage is reduced. Slows, freezes and knockback land as normal.
  • A reaction breaks through it.
  • It stacks with your other defences.

Tips and counterplay

  • Live your element. A fire caster who also smelts and fights in the Nether grows twice as fast.
  • Spread out. Each element has its own caps, so a day of fishing, farming and mining grows three.
  • Find weaknesses. Each new one in your Bestiary is 25 points and 25 mana for your heart.
  • Set off reactions. Each feeds both its elements.
  • Resisting starts at III. If one element keeps hurting you, grow that one.
  • A server can switch affinities off or change how fast they grow.
