Lights Along the Bank
What it is
Lantern Newts live in open, shallow water in swamps, mangrove swamps and the Luminous Reedlands. They have wide heads, frilled gills and three nodules that glow at night. Feed one gently and it gives you a Dusk Pearl, used for Marshlights and field notes.
A Lantern Newt in shallow water.
How to get it
- Watch first. Newts swim to nearby seagrass and browse without eating it up. Seeing one adds it to your Bestiary.
- Offer Seagrass while the newt is wet (in water or rain) and calm. It gives one Dusk Pearl, then rests for 2 minutes.
- Hurt newts flee and refuse food for a while. Dry newts give nothing.
- Killing a newt gives no pearl. Newts don’t breed.
Groups are one or two newts, and no more spawn where three already live.
How to use it
| Recipe (shapeless) | Result |
|---|---|
| Dusk Pearl + Glass + String + Seagrass | Marshlight: a reed lantern with light level 12. Works above or under water |
| Dusk Pearl + Book | Lights Along the Bank: Iona’s three-page Tideward field notes |
A Marshlight under water at night.
Magic: Tidebreath and Life spells make a wet newt’s lanterns brighten and trill. It can answer again after 10 seconds. This doesn’t heal it or give a pearl.
Tips and counterplay
- Keep newts calm and wet; rain counts.
- Marshlights draw Glimmerwings, which pollinate Moonreed.
- Give newts a place to rest with a Reed Refuge.
- Watch for Reedback Crabs on the same banks.
- Server owners can switch natural newt spawns off.
