Residues and reagents
What it is
Strong magic leaves a mark on the ground where it lands. Lightning leaves storm-glass, and frost leaves ice that won’t melt. These marks are residues. Each one fades on its own. Harvest it first and you get a reagent.
How to get it
These leave a residue of their element:
- A strong spell. The spell must cost 30 mana or more at full price.
- A 30-mana spell leaves 1 block of residue, a 45-mana spell 2, and a 60-mana spell 3. The biggest spells leave up to 5.
- Stronger spells also leave residue that lasts longer, up to half again.
- An overcast. Any spell you pay for by cracking a Heart Circle leaves one, even a cheap spell.
- Boss spells. These count too, but never inside a dungeon’s warded rooms.
- Element reactions. About one reaction in three leaves a small residue.
A rune with no element leaves nothing. Each caster leaves at most one residue every 5 seconds.
The ten residues
| Residue | Element | What it does | Lasts | Gives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smouldering Ash | Fire | Warm (nothing in it freezes), glows softly | Half a day | Cinder Ash |
| Everfrost | Frost | Slippery like ice, never melts | 1 day | Everfrost Shard |
| Fulgurite | Storm | Brush past it for Speed I, 3 s | 1.5 days | Fulgurite Shard |
| Lingering Eddy | Wind | Lifts you gently, breaks falls | 5 min | Bottled Gale |
| Riven Stone | Earth | Rumbles and puffs dust | 1 day | Geode Grit |
| Wildbloom | Life | Glowing flower bees visit; seeds a few more | 1 day | Wildbloom Petal |
| Void Scar | Void | Pulls in items and XP from 5 blocks; animals avoid it | 5 min | Hollow Dust |
| Star Glyph | Arcane | Stand on it: invisible things within 8 blocks glow | Half a day | Star Dust |
| Stilled Sand | Time | Slows walkers; dropped items never despawn | Half a day | Hourglass Sand |
| Bloodmoss | Blood | Feeds nearby nether wart; animals avoid it | Half a day | Sanguine Bead |
Times are Minecraft days. Everfrost, Riven Stone and a Void Scar replace the ground they land on. They give it back when they fade or when you harvest them.
Residues never grief
- They only land on natural ground such as grass, dirt, sand, stone or netherrack. They never land on built blocks or containers.
- Claims, spawn protection and server settings block them, just as they block spell block changes.
- There is a cap on how many can exist:
- 12 per chunk
- 6 in a small area
- 64 per caster
- They fade on time, even across restarts.
Server owners can turn residues off or change the mana threshold.
How to use it
Break a residue to harvest its reagent. Any tool works, but the right one is faster:
- pickaxe: Everfrost, Fulgurite, Riven Stone
- shovel: Ash, Sand, Void Scar
- hoe: Bloodmoss
A Lingering Eddy is only air. Use a glass bottle on it to collect a Bottled Gale.
Your first harvest earns the Lasting Mark feat.
Reagent uses
| Reagent | On its own | At the Fusion Altar (third rune socket) |
|---|---|---|
| Cinder Ash | Furnace fuel: smelts 4 items, a quarter faster | Tempered: keeps the higher rune rank |
| Everfrost Shard | Freezes still water to ice, still lava to obsidian | Stilled: half the XP levels, rounded up |
| Fulgurite Shard | Scrapes one weathering stage off copper | Charged: a rank I result becomes rank II |
| Bottled Gale | Drink: Slow Falling for 30 s, bottle returned | Unbound: signature pairs make the plain element fusion instead |
| Geode Grit | Ores within 8 blocks glow for 10 s | Grounded: the amethyst stays on the altar |
| Wildbloom Petal | Works like bone meal | Bountiful: two of the result |
| Hollow Dust | Pulls items and XP orbs within 10 blocks to you | Hollowed: the lower-tier rune stays on the altar |
| Star Dust | Places a starlight mote that lights a spot for 5 min | Exalted: one rank higher (up to III), +3 XP levels |
| Hourglass Sand | Skips a smelting furnace 10 s ahead; ages a baby animal 2 min | Familiar: a fusion you’ve made before costs no XP |
| Sanguine Bead | Grows nether wart one stage | Bloodbound: pay up to 6 levels in health, half a heart each, never your last heart |
The altar shows what a reagent will do. If a reagent would change nothing, the altar refuses it, so you never waste one. You can use one reagent at a time.
Tips and counterplay
- Cast big spells where you want the marks. Fire in your garden gives furnace ash. Frost on a path gives you a slide.
- Fight next to a Void Scar and the drops come to you.
- Put Stilled Sand under a farm’s drop point so items never despawn while it lasts.
- Save Everfrost Shards for large weaves. Halving a big XP cost is the biggest saving any reagent gives.
